What is Duskfade?

Duskfade is a single-player 3D action platformer developed by Weird Beluga Studio (the Spanish team behind the award-winning Clid the Snail) and published by Fireshine Games. Built in Unreal Engine 5, it's a love letter to the golden age of PS2-era action platformers — drawing comparisons to Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank.

You play as Zirian, a young workshop apprentice whose sister Allira is taken by a dark force called Despair. A mysterious Clock Tower has plunged the world of Tearfeld into eternal night, and Zirian — armed with his grandfather's giant clock-hand sword, the Minutero — must travel across four regions to shatter the chains locking the tower and save his sister.

Why This Game is Special

The narrative is deeply personal — it was shaped by Narrative Designer Ricardo Chorques Mesa's real experience of losing his grandfather. Each boss represents an emotional hurdle (Wrath, Sorrow, Fear, Jealousy, Despair), making the combat a metaphor for grief and growth. As the devs say: "Overcoming the absence of a loved one is not about forgetting; it's about learning to walk accompanied by their memory."

Core Combat Loop

The Time-Freeze Dodge — The Heart of Duskfade

The most important mechanic in Duskfade: a well-timed dodge roll freezes time. When you read an enemy's swing and roll at the last possible moment — just before the hit connects — the world snaps to a halt for 1-2 seconds while Zirian keeps moving. You get a window of free hits before everything unfreezes.

The mistake most players make: rolling too early. Let the wind-up nearly connect, THEN roll. The demo doesn't teach this well — many players clear the first hour without triggering it once.

The combat loop follows this rhythm:

StepActionDetails
1Normal AttacksThree-hit combo chains. Basic hits restore energy.
2Dodge ReadWatch enemy telegraph. Roll at the last second → time freezes.
3Free HitsDuring time freeze, land clean combos on frozen enemies.
4Special AttacksWhen energy is full, unleash Blast Attack or weapon transformations.
5Target SwapSwitch between enemies mid-combo. Keep moving — standing still = death.
