Duskfade doesn't use XP or levels. Instead, you collect Upgrade Gears and spend them across four skill tree branches. Here's everything about Zirian's movement kit, combat gadgets, and Cuckoo's support skills.
| Resource | Source | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade Gears | Enemies, chests, secrets | Skill tree purchases (4 branches) |
| Star Shards | Boxes, enemies | Currency / purchases from Traveler |
| Clock Heart Pieces | 3 pieces per upgrade | +1 Max Health |
| Rainbow Ingots | Hidden in each region | Minutero sword upgrades |
Zirian doesn't "level up" in the traditional sense. You won't see an XP bar or a level number. Instead, your power comes from: (1) skill tree investments, (2) Minutero transformations, (3) gadget unlocks, (4) health/energy upgrades from collectibles. This means exploration is mandatory — the best upgrades are hidden in the world, not earned by grinding.

Acquired from Arpeggio (butterfly-like musician NPC) in the Mount Cinder volcanic region. The Grapple is part of both traversal AND boss fights. You zip between anchor points in the environment, chaining together grapple points for high-speed movement.
Acquired early in the game (available in the demo). A high-damage cone hit that pushes Zirian back slightly. The knockback is a feature, not a bug — use it for:
The developers' informal name for this gadget is "Shotgun." It provides a ranged attack option in a primarily melee game. Uses energy, so it can't be spammed. Best used for:
Fast travel system. Unlock pads in each region to teleport between them. Essential for backtracking to earlier areas with new abilities. Always activate a pad when you find one.
| Ability | When Unlocked | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Jump | Start | Basic platforming |
| Double Jump | Start | Cover large gaps, reach higher platforms |
| Dodge Roll | Start | Combat defense + platforming extension |
| Grapple | Mount Cinder (from Arpeggio) | Zip to anchor points |
| Wall Jump | Early-mid game | Vertical traversal in temples/caves |
| Air Dash | Mid-game | Mid-air burst of speed for platforming |
| Rail Grinding | Mount Cinder | Grind along rails in mine shafts |
| Glide | Mid-game | Slow descent, cross large gaps |
| Swing | Mid-game | Swing from pendulums/grapple chains |
| Flip | Late game | Stylish dodge with i-frames |
The most important hidden tech: tack a dodge roll onto the tail end of your second jump. This stretches your gap coverage significantly. Cleared two "how am I supposed to reach that?" ledges in the demo just by adding the roll. The demo never explains this — keep it in your pocket for platforming stretches.
Grapple from anchor point to anchor point without touching the ground. This maintains momentum and covers massive distances. Practice in the crystal cave system in Mount Cinder — the layout is designed for chain grapple sequences.
Duskfade is designed so movement and combat flow seamlessly. You can grapple during combat, air-dash into an enemy, and combo from the approach. The target-swap system lets you switch enemies mid-combo while leaping. Use this to your advantage — never stay on the ground for long.
| Priority | Branch | Upgrade | Why |

| 3 | Gadgets | Grapple upgrades | Grapple is essential for traversal and bosses. |
| 4 | Zirian | Double Jump Power | Better platforming = more reachable secrets. |
| 5 | Minutero | Special Attack Power | Blast Attack + Chronoblast damage for tough fights. |
| 6 | Cuckoo | Time Extension | Cuckoo extends time-freeze — synergizes with Zirian tree. |
| 7 | Cuckoo | Item Finder | Pings hidden collectibles — essential for completionist runs. |
| 8 | Zirian | Dodge i-Frames | More forgiving dodge timing. |
